As an instructor, I strive to create a learning environment that
focuses on critical thinking and hands-on-learning. I am currently the instructor of record for WILD 4750: Monitoring and Assessment in Natural Resource and Environmental Management at Utah State University. WILD 4750 is a senior level class required of all majors in the Wildland Resources Department. In this class, I have used a flipped learning style in part of the class. Flipping takes the lecture out of the classroom. Lectures are recorded; students then have the ability to listen to the lectures on their own time, take notes, pause, rewind, and re-watch the whole lecture or certain parts of the lecture. Below, is an example of flipped lecture prior to a forestry field trip. Students were learning how about d-tapes, clinometers, and variable radius samples. By creating a lecture prior to the lab, lab time could focus on honing these techniques.
